MR. ROBERT F. LAYHER, AVG

Naval aviator and AVG "Flying Tiger" Flight Leader:  Originally trained as a pilot on multi-engine, flying boat patrol planes.  Following AVG service, Layher returned to the U.S. and utilized his naval flying boat training by piloting giant Sikorsky S-44 four engine flying boats  for the Naval Air Tranport Service's American Export Airlines, flying the Naval Diplomatic Service's trans-Atlantic v.i.p. passenger routes.  Following the Second World War, Layher  flew for both American Overseas Air Lines and Pan American Air Lines.  Upon retirement from Pan American, Layher settled in Hays, Kansas where he became a successful farmer, raising both wheat and beef cattle.
